Internet Marketing and Membership Sites

Membership websites are a great way to develop wealth online. The reason this is true is that online marketing has discovered an entirely new consumable product - content.

This component of content in Internet marketing can take on a life of its own, and that's where a membership website comes into the picture.

Look at it this way. You have worked to develop a broad base of content that has proven very successful in traffic building objectives. You've been providing this content buffet for free for a long time now and your constituents are pleased with the information.

OK, what if you developed a 'golden tier' service that is available to members only? What if you charged modestly for the membership? What if 20% of your site visitors became members?

Let's put this into practical terms. If you have 10,000 regular site visitors a month and 2,000 of them became members at $5 per member. That allows the content you've already developed to provide $1,000 a month from a built in consumer base.

Now, you can't just leave the membership site alone. You will need to make sure visitors have the opportunity to access regular content that is fresh and relevant to the site goals and customer expectations.

If you are a great writer this may never be an issue, but if you need help imagine setting aside $200 a month for freelance writing purposes. Add the fresh content to keep customers happy and you still have a sizeable profit from your membership site.

Imagine - no product fulfillment or postage issues. Everything is done online and membership fees are sent electronically.

In the words of almost every infomercial, "But wait, there's more." You can place banner ads and Google AdSense ads to your site and, in many cases, pay for any freelance work you may use.

The idea is to continue to find inexpensive, but valued tools and content for your members. You absolutely cannot keep your membership site static. This is Internet marketing at its best and it's got to be continually fresh and useful.

As the membership site grows so does your profits - so does your responsibility to your members. Inattention can spell the end of your site. Work to recycle content into member's only ebooks. The ebook will have more perceived value than the same content scattered over a large number of web pages.

If in the course of the next year you can increase memberships to 5,000 you can see a monthly revenue stream of $2,500 with expenses that will be only slightly higher than if there were only 2,000 members. Then consider developing another membership site featuring a new topic and new content welcoming new customers.

Allow members to interact by offering a forum that allows members to share experiences and tips. Allow members to become a community. By paying a fee they have a vested interest in utilizing your site. You might even be able to identify motivated members and enlist them to help you moderate the forum and contribute to the site. This can be accomplished because they love your site and want to help or because you offer a sum of money or free membership for their services.

Membership sites may not be for everyone, but it can be a logical leap forward when you've learned the skills of Internet marketing.

8 Ways to Avoid Internet Marketing Failure

Why is it that 90% (or whatever figure you've seen most recently) of people who start an online business fail..?

Here are some reasons why and 5 steps to increase your chances of beating the odds.

One of the reasons for the high failure rate is unrealistic expectations.

The newcomer doing their research in preparation for starting their online business is swamped by emails,
websites and 101 other channels telling them they can earn $X,000 in their first month, first week - or by this time tomorrow.

I can count on less than the fingers of one hand the number of websites, emails or so-called training programs that tell you it will take time, it will take work, and it will take money to get going.

The reality is that it needs persistence, application, patience, and work. But these aren't mentioned for obvious reasons: it's not good sales talk.

Yet this results in hundreds of people launching into their new business with totally the wrong expectations. And because they have the wrong expectations they make the wrong plans, the wrong budgets and, ultimately, the wrong decisions.

The first real business program that I became involved with made this error, as a result of which I nearly walked away from it. Fortunately for me I didn't, because it's now turning around for me and starting to bring me some reasonable income.

But how many others have been through the same disillusionment with their program and walked..? Thousands would be my bet.

For some reason people who are not already successfully in business on the internet seem to treat the idea of setting up a business online differently than they would if it was off-line. They don't take it so seriously.

So here are 8 things you must do to avoid disappointment and start on your road to Internet Marketing success:

  1. Recognize that this is a complex business in a very fast moving environment - and give yourself the time to learn about it properly
  2. Accept that, unless you're very lucky or hand-held by a successful guru, you won't make a profit for months (possibly years) - and make sure that you have other sources of income to keep you going in the meantime. (Don't give up the day job until you can afford to)
  3. Create your 'Why'. Understand the reason you want to get into Internet Marketing, write it down and remind yourself of it many times a day when the going gets tough (as it will).
  4. Make a proper business plan - as you would for an off-line business
  5. Stay focused. Pick the type of business you're going to set up and don't be distracted by the countless offers of riches tomorrow. Only buy products/eBooks/eCourses or whatever, that will directly move you closer to success in your chosen business type.
  6. Accept that every failure is a lesson learned - and be sure to learn from it.
  7. Watch how successful people do it and learn from them. But stay true to yourself. Don't copy something if your gut feel makes you feel uneasy about it.
  8. Find your 'heroes' and learn from them.

That means more sales for you, which result in you becoming very rich. Of course, this doesn't mean you can just sit back and rest completely for the rest of your life. The time you have to put into will decrease greatly, but you will still have to keep promoting the products and updating your site to keep the traffic flowing.

Also, after you make your first sale, you know how to do internet marketing. This means that you can go on and easily promote other product knowing your strategy is going to work.
