Basic Internet Marketing For Your Small Business

For a small business that has always been brick and mortar only, the transition to the online world can be a difficult one. A business owner that has always done offline advertising and networking may feel that they are at a disadvantage when it comes to marketing their business online.

However, that is not necessarily the case. In fact, these business owners may actually have an advantage in that they already know what kind of marketing materials and messages work for their business offline, and they can use those advertising pieces and marketing activities to begin to drive traffic to their online destinations.

More and more small businesses find it essential to market their products and services online. Customers are increasingly turning to the Web to research companies, compare product features and prices, and to purchase online. A company that does not take advantage of the Web and to market their business can lose valuable customers and profits.

A website does nothing for your business or organization by itself. Its use depends on traffic, and traffic depends on marketing. It has never been easier or more cost-effective to market online. Below I outline a couple of strategies that you can start employing immediately to start driving traffic to your business:

Search engine optimisation

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is an iterative process that includes cycles of competitive research, website changes, waiting for the search engine spiders to crawl the website, evaluating the resulting rankings, and making more changes. SEO is not a one-time effort; rather SEO is done on a continuous basis. To ensure your website gets visitors, Search Engine Optimization should be performed for at least several months. SEO results don't happen overnight.

Email marketing

Email marketing, when used properly, is one of the most cost-effective tools you can use to communicate with your customers, clients, or membership groups. Whether you sell products or services, email is a fast, efficient and inexpensive way to keep in contact with your customers and prospects, make sales, get traffic to your web site and boost your profitability. Furthermore, if you use a good email management company to deliver the mail, you can track the effectiveness of subject lines, article headlines or special offers.

Blogging

Let's take for example having as part of your marketing strategy a business blog with frequently published articles covering the subjects that your clients and potential clients want to know about. If you write compelling content that is relevant to your readers and the search engine robots, then you increase the likelihood that people will find your articles when they search online for the kinds of products or services you offer.

Gut Wrenching Personal Internet Marketing Story That Will Give You Perspective

Let me ask you a very important question. Are you still struggling with your internet business? The reason that I ask this is that many adverts on the internet do not give you an accurate picture of what is necessary to succeed online.

How many adverts have you seen that promise that you will make $1,000 a day. Anything that seems too good to be true usually is. Now I am not saying that it is impossible to earn this, but it will take time to learn various skills to achieve this.

Let me give you my own personal story as this will clearly put things in perspective for you. I was working in a very good job and then one day I came across an internet marketing course. The sales letter promised that you could start your very own internet business working from the comfort of your own home. At this point I was investigating franchises and an internet business appealed a lot more to me because you had the freedom to work from home.

I have not really found this to be difficult in comparison to other businesses, but the learning curve is very steep. The first skill I learnt was to build and generate traffic to my websites. Unfortunately, I could not monetize my websites. The second skill I learnt was to choose a profitable niche market. This can make or break your business. This is an acquired skill and occasionally I may still make the mistake where I cannot monetize a website. However, if this does happen then I immediately abandon the idea.

Finally, the last two steps that you need to master are list building and copywriting. These are acquired skills that you will master over time. It is almost like going to gym and doing weight training. The more you go the heavier the weights that you can pick up.
