A Quick Guide to Internet Marketing

There are tens of thousands of articles out there that explain the concepts of internet marketing like it is some form of brain surgery. The truth is marketing on the internet is not much different from real life marketing. In conventional business marketing, the process always starts with a product or service. After selecting the product, we must now decide on how to sell it, whether it is going to be sold in a shop, by mail, on TV, or direct selling. After selecting the method of sales, we now proceed to refine the systems to maximize the conversion rates.

Internet marketing is extremely similar to real life marketing. We always start of with a selection of a niche or product. For beginners, it is always easier to start by selecting a product that you are passionate about, or at least have a little knowledge of. If you are interested in that product, chances are there are others that would be too. Once the product is selected, you must now decide on the marketing methods. There are generally three categories of internet marketing, namely email-marketing, advertisement marketing and search engine marketing. It would take some time to master any of these three methods of internet marking so it is always best to specialize and master one of them before moving to another.

E-mail marketing is the perfect internet marketing system for those who already have huge contact lists on their hands. This form of marketing is where you try to sell your product or services to someone via email. The system involves sending periodical emails or newsletters to your contacts in hope that they will make a purchase after reading the sales letter. There are two main components in this marketing method. Firstly, you will need to learn how to collect and develop a contact list of highly targeted potential customers. After that, you will need to learn how to write a good sales copy that would effectively convert your email-readers into customers.

Online advertising is another popular internet marketing method. This method requires you to create a website or blog on your product or services, and then use paid advertising generate targeted traffic for the website. Here, you would need to first learn how to create a site, also known as a landing page that would effectively convert visitors into customers (good conversion rates). After developing a good landing page, you would then need to learn on how to get the cheapest, and most targeted traffic from paid advertising services like Adwords. This internet marketing method is not recommended for beginners. Because you are paying for every visitor that comes to you website, you can quickly lose a lot of money if you don't know what you are doing.

Search engine marketing involves selling your products via free search engine traffic (known as organic traffic). Search engine traffic is a great marketing tool, as they are free and very highly targeted. Here, you will need how to optimize your website (search engine optimization or SEO) to get the highest search engine ranking possible for a particular keyword.

Internet Marketing - Fear of Failure Or Fear of Success?

So, you want to try your hand at Internet Marketing,

  1. But, you don't have any experience.
  2. But, you don't know where to start.
  3. But, you don't have a product to sell.
  4. But, you don't have a web site.

OK, I am going to start kicking your butts.

  1. Of course you don't have any experience. You are new at this. Will you make mistakes? Sure you will. Will they be fatal? No. This is the Internet. It is like a big video game. If you fail, you get to go back and start over. If you do it right the next time it has only cost you a little time and the experience will teach you something.
  2. You don't know where to start. There are literally thousands of people online who are willing to give you advice. Most of them want something in return. What do they want? Most of them want your name and e-mail address. Then, they want your money. The smart ones offer you something free, to gain your confidence and to make you feel obligated to them. Then, they want your money! Go ahead, sign up for their free gifts. They are usually a little shopworn, a little out of date, but you will learn something from them. These people will e-mail you, frequently. You will soon learn who you may want to buy from. I get between 50 and 100 e-mail offers every day. I do this just to spot new products and trends.
  3. You don't know what to sell. Learn about niche marketing. You probably have information in your own head that people will be willing to pay for. There are countless millions of information hungry people online. I just did a GOOGLE search on "how to crochet one handed.". Believe it, or not, 188,000 people were looking for that obscure information, today. If you don't know anything about a subject you can become an expert very quickly by doing A LOT of research, organizing the information and publishing it in a readable manner. Voila! Your very first e-book! Remember - If the teacher is just one day ahead of the brightest pupil, he/she looks like a genius. If you don't want to sell your own product, set up a free ClickBank account and try affiliate marketing. There are literally thousands of products available for you to sell, all paying good commissions.
  4. You don't have a web site. Depending on the niche you choose, you may never need one. Blogging, social networking, freelance writing and many other niches don't require you to have a web site, but in my opinion you won't feel like you really belong without one. Using a free program like Nvu, or Kompozer, you can create a perfectly acceptable, money making web site, without knowing HTML and without spending a cent.
